About the library
Silesian University library in Opava provides services primarily to students and teachers of the faculty of business in Karviná, but other employees of the faculty and also interested members of the general public can use library.
The library now has in an ever-expanding collection of more than 52,000 professional publications, about 65,000 titles of professional journals, repository with more than 11,000 bachelor’s, master’s and dissertation theses.
Digital library contains over 130 books from the library’s holdings and other copyright-free documents from the holdings of other libraries.
The library is equipped with the Carmen online catalog, in which it is possible to search for all documents stored in the library services.
Library also includes a script shop, which is located in the main faculty building. There is also a study room with internet access. Library collections are not only supplemented by purchases, but also by exchange and donation.
Registration
On the first visit, you need to register in the rental room (on the ground floor) at the loan desk. The fee for an SU student and a graduate is 70 CZK , the public 100 CZK (per calendar year) or a one-time entrance fee of 10 CZK.
To register, you need an identification card (ID card or passport).

Loan service
At library premises
Some documents can be borrowed only in the library. Outside the library, these documents can be borrowed only exceptionally with the consent of the library staff. In particular, the following are borrowed in person: literature included in the reference collection, daily newspapers and individual issues of serials (eg magazines), digital data carriers, final theses.
Absence loan
Some documents can be borrowed outside the library. The loan period is determined according to the categorization of users. You can renew borrowed documents through your reader’s account in the online catalog, by e-mail, in person or by phone. Short-term loan documents can be borrowed outside the library for 14 days.
If the University library does not have the required document in its book collection, University can borrow it from another library in the Czech Republic or abroad, through the interlibrary loan service (MVS).
Within MVS it is not possible to request final qualification thesis (bachelor’s, diploma, dissertation, habilitation), whole issues of magazines, standards, patents, utility models, etc.
Bibliobox
A terminal with a return box is installed at the reception area of the university dormitory (Na Vyhlídce), which can be used 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Self-service rental
A self-service loan desk is installed in the rental shop, where users can borrow books themselves.
The loan period
Employees and students of the doctoral combined and full-time study program: 1 year, possibility to extend twice
Students of the full-time bachelor’s and master’s study program: 30 days, possibility to extend twice
Students of the combined bachelor’s and master’s study program: 45 days, possibility to extend twice
Lifelong learning students and university students of the third age (U3V): 30 days
SU graduates: 15 days, possibility to extend twice if there is no reservation
Public: 30 days
MVS documents: 15 to 30 days
Penalty fees after the loan period: 1 CZK day / publication
